Let’s meet at the beach!
Join me and 13 other Gem Affiliates on magical Edisto Island (South Carolina) for 3 and 1/2 days of “Treasure Hunting” fun. Our gathering place: a 3-story gem of a beach house on Palmetto Drive with multiple balconies overlooking the ocean. We’ll gather on Wednesday late afternoon (September 25) and play from Thursday through Sunday morning (September 29).
During the fresh morning hours, we’ll explore the interiors of fantastic gems in search of the gorgeous landscapes hidden within, translate your unique design into a freezer paper pattern, and ultimately create a small quilt top of your design. The afternoons are free for beach time, sewing, napping, or whatever your heart desires.
The price includes class fee and materials fee, lodging at Thread Retreat’s “Big Kahuna” beach house, breakfast, lunch, and cocktail snacks. Dinner, big-girl beverages, and travel to/from the Island are on your own. To learn more about our destination home, visit https://threadsretreats.com/edisto-sc/
Edisto Island is one of the last rustic beach communities on the Atlantic. Resisting the intense commercialization of nearby islands such as Hilton Head, Edisto remains a community of beach cottages (both old and new), small shops, and a handful of restaurants. While there is a golf course in the middle of the island and a few multi-story buildings surrounding it, the focus when on Edisto is waves, water, and sun.
I typically teach “Treasure Hunting” as a two-day class. The first day is devoted to exploring the elements of design and composition as we search for the hidden landscapes within gorgeous gems. Once you’ve found several compositions that intrigue you, I show you how to translate your vision into a quilt using freezer-paper piecing techniques. You’ll learn how to identify the faceting pattern that will serve as your blueprint for piecing your diamond back together. Then I’ll show you how to code your facets for location, color, and adjacency — great visual clues that will help you easily piece your masterpiece back together. Finally, we’ll cut out our facets and sew them together to recreate your lovely gem into a quilt.
I’ll provide images for your inspiration OR you can bring images that you’ve collected and have always dreamed of bringing to life in quilt form.
Throughout our time together, we’ll focus on the importance of choosing joy over fear throughout the creative process. We’ll experiment with new ways to approach our art, each other, and ourselves with reverence, respect, and joy.
Located at the tip of Edisto Island, the Big Kahuna is a 5 bedroom, 6 bathroom house with an elevator. It is owned by Lyvonn Reese, quiltmaker and future Gem Affiliate! She has created the perfect retreat location for quiltmakers/beach-lovers! Here’s what Lyvonn has to say about this gem of a house:
The spacious, multi-level floor plan sleeps 15 comfortably and offers beautiful views of the ocean. A wall of glass doors and windows line the second story main living and dining area, giving way to endless ocean view. The large kitchen is attractive and functional for entertaining; a professional-size refrigerator and dual ovens makes preparing meals for a crowd easy. The dining area seats 16 comfortably at either the large dining room table and/or neighboring granite countertop bar. And nothing beats the amazing 1950s style bubbling jukebox with 100 CDs available for the entire group’s enjoyment.
For retreats, we customize set-up for each individual groups needs. There are 2 cutting tables and 2 large ironing stations available. We have a few table type lights for those who may need extra light after dark. Just bring your rotary cutters and sewing supplies. With the beach in view, you can sew all day with a walk on the beach for a break and eat dinner on the large screen porch!
