Meet Cathy Fyock, the Business Book Strategist and MY book coach! I have an idea in mind for an art quilt book about my gem quilts, I want to get it done FAST, and guess what? I know how to do exactly that, because Cathy taught me how.
I decided to invest in myself and join Cathy's Group Coaching sessions in 2015. Over the next six months I participated in twice-monthly calls with other authors-to-be and learned how to get a book out of my head and onto the page.
Topics ranged from organizing your book, getting past procrastination, marketing, publishing (including how to self-publish), and more. She invited experts from the industry to share insights with us during special webinars. And most importantly, showed us that becoming an author could be more than a far-off dream. In fact, it can be done in six weeks with the right planning and commitment.
Cathy has written lots of books to help authors get their ideas out into the world. Her most recent work is Blog 2 Book: Repurposing Content To Discover The Book You've Already Written. I love that title. Her premise: if you've been blogging for a while, it's very likely that you already have the content for your first (or next) book.
The other reason I love this book is on page 33: "My friend and client MJ Kinman is an expert quilter who takes separate -- and often disparate -- fabric squares and turns them into exquisite art quilts (you can see some of her quilts if you visit her website at www.MJKinman.com). In principle, this is much the same as our work in creating a book from blog posts: taking disparate materials, which all have value for a single subject, and finding ways to stitch them together into an elegant whole....It doesn't happen by accident. There is a form and structure to MJ's craft -- and in the same way, there can be a structure to the way you "stitch" your blog posts together into a book." Thanks for the shout out, dear Cathy!

I caught up with Cathy over coffee last week and learned that several of the authors who participated in my group coaching session are already on their second, third, and fourth books. What?!
So here I am in Week Two of my six-week plan. My table of contents is about 75% complete and I'm deciding which chapter to tackle as my sample to submit to the publisher. (I'm going to go with a quilt/crafts publisher rather than self-publish...or at least that's the plan this week.) Wish me luck! I'll definitely keep you posted.
