Treasure Hunting at Sparrow Quilt Company (Edmonton, Alberta CANADA)

Join me in February at Sparrow Quilt Company when we’ll take a new look at familiar subjects using the magic of online image editing tools, as well as physical manipulation of images. Zoom into the heart of a diamond to find hidden landscapes. Spin them around to find different perspectives. Set them on fire or cool them down with color management controls. Or mash several images together with combination tools. Then take your dramatic interior landscape and create a stunning mini-quilt, a study of light and color.

Diamond Divas & Drama Queens: A Gem Quilt Trunk Show (Chinook Guild of Fibre Arts, Calgary, Alberta CANADA)

The most beautiful gemstones capture light and reflect it back to us with unique brilliance, revealing fiery personalities. These are the divas and the drama queens of the gem world. Every one of them has a story to tell…just like people. This slide lecture and trunk show of my gem quilts chronicle my story -- my 20-year adventure in learning how to create the biggest diamonds in the world in cloth.

During my presentation, I’ll discuss the techniques I use to create and assemble the hundreds of pieces in each diamond, materials I use to create the wash of color and light across a gem’s surface, and the quilting techniques that enhance a gem’s facets.

And as so often happens with any artist’s decades-long journey, I’ll share what I’ve learned from my leap from the Corporate life into the Creative life.

Following the trunk show, I will present a Lunch & Learn session on finding inspiration deep inside images of gems in my Treasure Hunting “Lunch & Learn” presentation.

Students will leave the class with a small top that can later be hand- or machine-quilted at home. Student supply list will be provided at time of booking.

Treasure Hunting Special 2-Day Class at Quiltique (Las Vegas, NV)

to Jul 28

Treasure Hunting Special 2-Day Class at Quiltique (Las Vegas, NV)

This special 2-day class allows participants to explore principles of design and learn a powerful new technique that they can add to their quiltmaking skill set: single-foundation piecing.

My approach to this class is as an exercise in exploration, a constant asking of the question “What if?” By introducing new ideas as possibilities – not as absolutes – participants are apt to approach them with less resistance, playing with an idea in terms of their own experience. The exercise in exploration pertains to both participants’ artistic and personal landscapes.

The first day is devoted to sharing examples of how I find exquisite designs deep within faceted gemstones, giving participants the tools and images to do the same, and providing time to play and experiment. By the end of the first day, participants will have created a design to work with on Day Two.

Day Two is devoted to learning techniques to chart and piece their faceted landscape -- the same techniques I use to create my giant gem portraits.
